CHIEF FINANCIAL OFFICER OF THE SEMINARY
Chief Financial Officer, Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary, Columbia, SC
The seminary is currently accepting applications for the position of Chief Financial Officer. This position is responsible to organize, oversee, and direct all financial, human resources, information technology, and physical resources of the seminary. Desired qualities include a bachelor’s or masters degree in business and finance, related occupational experience, team leadership and management, an awareness of the work and practices of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, and a commitment to the Christian faith and the mission of the seminary. Job Details
Position Description: to organize, oversee, and direct all financial, human resources, information technology, and physical resources of the Seminary so that increasing numbers of students receive an excellent theological education that is “Christ centered, faithfully Lutheran, and ecumenically committed.” This education is to be offered at an affordable cost while establishing and sustaining excellence in the business operations of the Seminary.
The person hired to fill this position will exhibit the capacity to meet the needs of the Board of Trustees by providing timely, accurate, consistent reports, by working closely with the Investment Committee of the Seminary and its chair to meet the investment goals of the seminary, and by overseeing all business and property matters related to the seminary in a way that furthers the mission of the seminary.
The person hired to fill this position will exhibit the capacity to meet the needs of students by leading the seminary to provide continually improving classroom, residential and auxiliary services with excellent financial, personnel, information technology, and administrative skills.
The person will exhibit the capacity to meet the needs of the faculty, administration, and staff of the Seminary by establishing and sustaining continually improving financial, information technology, physical plant, and auxiliary services.
Personal Qualities:
The successful applicant will present the following qualities:
- a minimum of a baccalaureate degree in business and finance and the Seminary prefers a person with an MBA from a credible business program.
- at least three years experience working in business offices and the ability to lead and coordinate the work of a small staff.
- an awareness of the work and practices of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America and a commitment to the Christian faith.
- the ability to oversee and manage a staff and develop a team
- a commitment to the mission of the Seminary
Benchmarks
The successful applicant will be evaluated on the following criteria:
- an unqualified opinion on the annual audits and the approval of all accrediting and oversight organizations
- the development of an annual seminary budget that maintains adequate cash reserves to meet all obligations on time
- the maximum in investment earnings working closely with the investment manager and the investment committee of the seminary
- hiring and personnel practices that adhere to all applicable laws and hiring and employment standards
- the preparation and distribution of monthly financial reports by no later than the 5th day of the following month
- the ability to lead and manage the work of the contractor for all building maintenance and upkeep
- the most up to date and responsive information technology oversight to improve the ability of the seminary to use IT
- office and business practices that are student centered and focused
- the confidence of the president and board leadership
- the ability to effectively communicate the seminary’s financial position
- the ability to work effectively with others on the administrative team of the seminary
- an efficient, organized, welcoming, and neat office
- a strategic plan for the business office that focuses on continually improving outcomes
- the ability to oversee the seminary’s insurance coverage
- oversee the work of the food service committee
- maintain a good working relationship with the seminary’s bank
